HMC Awards

The HMC Board of Directors authorized these awards in 1999. Each is memorialized by a special ceramic award and a bonus of $1,000.00.

PETE HALBERT AWARD
The Pete Halbert Award bears the name of our founder. He began operating a veneer and sawmill in Dialville in 1940. In 1948 Pete Halbert entered the iron ore mining business, which he ran until his retirement in 1969.

From 1969 until he passed away in 1985, Pete Halbert’s “hobby” was working as a production hand in the mill that he loved so much. He worked each day to produce quality products for his customers. The recipient of this year’s award reflects those same ideals of a manufacturing man. Make good quality and make it on time.

For the Pete Halbert Award we had 6 nominations for the year 2000.

The recipient must also have a perfect safety record for the year, and the recipient’s safety and efficiency suggestions submitted were also considered.

Here are some excerpts from the recipient of the 2000 Pete Halbert Award:
  • Makes our production more efficient.
  • Accomplished a lot in one year.
  • Does things that increase our profits.
  • Works very hard on many improvements.
  • Keeps us running.
  • Works tirelessly to allow HMC to keep up in a changing industry.
  • Enhances production capabilities.

CHARLES DIAL AWARD
Charles Dial, Grace’s husband, began operating Halbert Mill Company when Pete went into the iron ore business in 1948. Charles oversaw construction of a new mill at the site that is now M&H in 1950. Charles worked with the steel strapping manufacturers and Acme Brick Company to develop the “cube” style of brick package in the early 1960s.

As demand for Halbert Mill products grew throughout the brick industry Charles traveled to plants throughout the southwest to teach and take care of his customers. As the business continued to grow Charles moved the wood products manufacturing to a separate business. This allowed Charles time to focus on meeting customer needs from Halbert Mill Company

Charles built his reputation on providing a quality product and unmatched service. He was known and respected by many brickmakers and his death in 1977 was a significant loss to the industry.

This year’s recipient of the Charles Dial Award reflects that same genuine concern for each customer that Charles did.

For the year 2000, we had 7 nominations for the Charles Dial Award.

The recipient also had a perfect safety record for the year.

And we also considered suggestions input by this person in selecting this recipient.

Here are some award excepts from this year’s Charles Dial Award:
